Summary
The Patuxent Appeal Elementary Campus formerly known as Appeal Elementary School is located in the heart of Lusby, Maryland. The original building opened in 1949 as a two-room schoolhouse, with several additions and renovations occurring over the years. Appeal served students in grades K through 5 until 1992 when Patuxent Elementary School opened. From that date up until the 2013-14 school year, Appeal educated students in grades 3-5, while Patuxent provided services for students in grades Pre-K through 2nd. The two buildings merged in to one campus as of the 2013-14 school year with the grade levels remaining in each building. The AES/PES shared campus is approximately 30 acres in size and is within walking distance of the Southern Community Center and public library.
Our initial green school certification was granted in 2009. We have continued to educate our students, staff, and families on the importance of taking care of the earth through staff meetings, afterschool green team meetings, workshops, emails, and newsletters.
The staff, students, community members and volunteers have been working hard over the years to maintain our green school accomplishments. We have 4 large rain gardens that help to filter rainwater and run-off that enters the Chesapeake Bay. Our after school green team and parent and community volunteers maintain the rain gardens. Staff and students also use the rain gardens as an educational resource. We continue to provide a habitat for native bluebirds by monitoring the eight nesting boxes installed at our school. Our school also has a new educational nature trail and outdoor learning area installed by local boy scouts. We continue our efforts in water and energy conservation on a daily basis. Our energy conservation efforts have resulted in rewards totaling over $1000.00. Students and staff continue their recycling efforts and the streamline recycling has resulted in a decrease in the amount of solid waste reduction.
Our green team is looking forward to the projects planned for the next few months that include a Native plant garden, trail restoration, front garden makeover and Butterfly Memorial Garden.
Top Five Accomplishments
1. Rain Gardens
The four large rain gardens are maintained by our after school green team and parent and community volunteers and provide a habitat for native plants and animals and an outdoor area where students can extend their learning about the environment.
2. Outdoor Nature Trail and Learning Area
The local scout troop under the lead of a local scout created an outdoor learning area and nature trail for our students to use as an educational resource. The scouts installed benches at the entrance of the trail for students to use.
3. Bluebird Nesting Boxes
The after school green team, parent and student volunteers and community members have routinely monitored, rebuilt and replaced our eight nesting boxes to ensure that suitable homes were available for bluebirds to successfully raise their young.
4. School-wide Recycling, Reducing and Re-using Efforts
Our students, staff and volunteers participate in efforts to reduce, re-use and recycle materials that include paper, plastics, metals, and glass.
5. Energy and Water Conservation
Through the efforts of our staff and students and the installation of motion sensors, our energy usage has decreased significantly and our students’ awareness of water conservation is visible through student created posters placed above sinks and water fountains as reminders to all.
